My book: The Sex Myth
Book project, forthcoming 2013.
I’m working on a book for Simon & Schuster (US) about Generation Y, sex and identity. The book is a mix of accessible academic theory, popular culture and interviews and I’m looking for people aged 16 to 35 around the globe to share their thoughts and experiences with me.
I’m interested in questions such as:
- How do our sex and relationships experiences feed into our beliefs about who we are and how we fit in?
- Are college students really “hooking up” as much as the newspapers say they are?
- What does it feel like to have loads of sex appeal… and what does it feel like to think that you have none?
- Do guys really want to have sex all the time? With anyone who asks?
- What do we think is “normal” these days… and if you’re not normal, how does that feel?
- What messages do and media and popular culture send us about sex? How do these compare with the messages we get from our friends and family?
- Are lesbians locked out of the ‘raunch culture’ debate?
- Why is sex considered so important in our culture anyway?
… and many more.
Think you’re too boring? You’re not. I’m not looking for the people with the most “interesting” or “out there” sex lives; I’m looking for people who are open, like to talk, and are able to reflect on their experiences – whether you’re male, female, gay, straight, are a virgin or have had sex with 500 people.
Initial interviews will take place over phone or Skype, and usually run for around 40-60 minutes. If we hit it off, I may follow up with you at a later date to talk more – whether over the phone, or on one of the several research trips I will be undertaking this year.
All interviewees featured in the book will be given pseudonyms, and identifying details will be changed upon request.
